Exploring The Chemistry Of Textiles Chemistry Essay Textile chemistry is primarily an applied form of chemistry. It is a highly specialized field that applies the principles of the basic fields of chemistry to the understanding of textile materials and to their functional and esthetic modification into useful and desirable items. Textile materials are used in clothing, carpet, tire yarn, sewing thread, and air bags. Some textile chemists are less oriented toward manufacturing processes and more focused toward fiber technologies. The study of textile chemistry begins with the knowledge of fibers themselves-both natural and synthetic. Because synthetic fibers are such an important part of todays textile business, the field includes many who are trained as polymer chemists. The interaction between textile chemistry and materials science is also increasing. Textile chemistry includes the application of the principles of surface chemistry to cleaning processes and modifications such as dyeing and finishing. Textiles are formed by weaving, knitting, crocheting, knotting, or pressing fibres together . The words fabric and cloth are used in textile assembly trades (such as tailoring and dressmaking) as synonyms for textile. However, there are subtle differences in these terms. Textile refers to any material made of interlacing fibres. Fabric refers to any material made through weaving, knitting, crocheting, or bonding. Cloth refers to a finished piece of fabric that can be used for a purpose such as covering a bed. Hydrophobic Water repelling; having a low degree of moisture absorption or attraction. Resiliency Ability of a fabric to return to its original shape after compressing, bending or other deformation. In the past, all textiles were made from natural fibres, including plant, animal, and mineral sources. In the 20th century, these were supplemented by artificial fibres made from petroleum. Textiles are made in various strengths and degrees of durability, from the finest gossamer to the sturdiest canvas. The relative thickness of fibres in cloth is measured in deniers. Microfibre refers to fibres made of strands thinner than one denier. Animal textiles Animal textiles are commonly made from hair or fur. Wool refers to the hair of the domestic goat or sheep, which is distinguished from other types of animal hair in that the individual strands are coated with scales and tightly crimped, and the wool as a whole is coated with an oil known as lanolin, which is waterproof and dirtproof. Woollen refers to a bulkier yarn produced from carded, non-parallel fibre, while worsted refers to a finer yarn which is spun from longer fibres which have been combed to be parallel. Wool is commonly used for warm clothing. Cashmere, the hair of the Indian cashmere goat, and mohair, the hair of the North African angora goat, are types of wool known for their softness. The best-known type of silk is obtained from cocoons made by the larvae of the silkworm Bombyx mori reared in captivity (sericulture). The shimmering appearance for which silk is prized comes from the fibres triangular prism-like structure which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles. Silk is also the strongest natural fiber known to man. The length of the silk fiber depends on how it has been prepared. Since the cocoon is made of one strand, if the cocoon is unwound carefully the fibers can be very long. Wool Wool is the fiber derived from the fur of animals of the Caprinae family, principally sheep, but the hair of certain species of other mammals such as goats, alpacas, and rabbits may also be called wool. Alpaca Alpaca fiber is that of an alpaca. It is warmer than sheeps wool and lighter in weight. It is soft, fine, glossy, and luxurious. The thickness of quality fiber is between 12-29 micrometres. Most alpaca fiber is white, but it also comes in various shades of brown and black. Angora Angora wool or Angora fiber refers to the downy coat produced by the Angora rabbit. Angora is prized for its softness, thin fibers of around 12-16 micrometres for quality fiber, and what knitters refer to as a halo (fluffiness). The fiber felts very easily. Angora fiber comes in white, black, and various shades of brown. Cashmere Cashmere wool is wool obtained from the Cashmere goat. Cashmere is characterized by its luxuriously soft fibers, with high napability and loft. In order for a natural goat fiber to be considered Cashmere, it must be under 18.5 micrometers in diameter and be at least 3.175 centimeters long. It is noted as providing a natural light-weight insulation without bulk. Fibers are highly adaptable and are easily constructed into fine or thick yarns, and light to heavy-weight fabrics. Sheeps wool Wool has two qualities that distinguish it from hair or fur: it has scales which overlap like shingles on a roof and it is crimped; in some fleeces the wool fibers have more than 20 bends per inch. Wool varies in diameter from below 17 micrometres to over 35 micrometres The finer the wool, the softer it will be, while coarser grades are more durable and less prone to pilling. Plant textiles Grass, rush, hemp, and sisal are all used in making rope. In the first two, the entire plant is used for this purpose, while in the last two, only fibres from the plant are utilized. Coir (coconut fibre) is used in making twine, and also in floormats, doormats, brushes, mattresses, floor tiles, and sacking. Straw and bamboo are both used to make hats. Straw, a dried form of grass, is also used for stuffing, as is kapok. Fibres from pulpwood trees, cotton, rice, hemp, and nettle are used in making paper. Acetate is used to increase the shininess of certain fabrics such as silks, velvets, and taffetas. Seaweed is used in the production of textiles. The epistolary form can add greater realism to a story, because it mimics the workings of real life The founder of the epistolary novel in English is said by many to be James Howell (1594ââ¬â1666) with ââ¬Å"Familiar Lettersâ⬠, who writes of prison, foreign adventure, and the love of women. There are two theories on the genesis of the epistolary novel. The first claims that the genre originated from novels with inserted letters, in which the portion containing the third person narrative in between the letters was gradually reduced.[1] The other theory claims that the epistolary novel arose from miscellanies of letters and poetry: some of the letters were tied together into a (mostly amorous) plot. The first truly epistolary novel, the Spanish ââ¬Å"Prison of Loveâ⬠(Cà ¡rcel de amor) (c.1485) by Diego de San Pedro, belongs to a tradition of novels in which a large number of inserted letters already dominated the narrative The epistolary novel as a genre became popular in the 18th century in the works of such authors as Samuel Richardson, with his immensely successful novels Pamela (1740) and Clarissa (1749). In the novel Pamela, the female narrator can be found wielding a pen and scribbling her diary entries under the most dramatic and unlikely of circumstances. The first North American novel, The History of Emily Montague (1769) by Frances Brooke was written in epistolary form. There are three types of epistolary novels: monologic (giving the letters of only one character, like Letters of a Portuguese Nun and The Sorrow Of Young Werther), dialogic (giving the letters of two characters, like Mme Marie Jeanne Riccoboniââ¬â¢s Letters of Fanni Butlerd (1757), and polylogic (with three or more letter-writing characters, such as in Bram Stokerââ¬â¢s Dracula)

People lose interest in things they used to enjoy and may withdraw from others.â⬠While the CMHA does not explicitly note in its definition that both men and women may experience this mental illness, its use of the words ââ¬Å"someâ⬠and ââ¬Å"people,â⬠instead of women, can be seen as suggesting that both sexes are susceptible. The assertion that both men and women can experience postpartum depression is corroborated by a study done by Escribà -Agà ¼ir and Artazcoz (2011). Despite the position of these two sources, Thurtle (1995) explicitly notes that diagnosis of postpartum depression should be ââ¬Å"restricted to mothers with a depressive illness,â⬠asserting that this pathology exclusively affects women. Being that Thurtleââ¬â¢s study was published in 1995, within a decade of researchers beginning to study sex differences, and similarities, and only a year after women were allowed to participate in biomedical research, it is likely that they did not c onsider investigating the illness through a gendered lens. Failing to recognize that both men and women are affected by postpartum depression, Thurtle (1995, p.418) asserts that the pathology is due to learned helplessness, a condition much more prevelant in women than men (Ris and Woods, 1983, p.1067). Normal simply means average, whereby people who behave normally are those who act in an average typical way. From a statistical point of view normal behavior is that which is expected from the majority of the people. Therefore abnormal behavior refer to any behavior which is not typical. Abnormal also is the clear sense of deviating from the normal or differing from the typical in a well defined behavioral characteristics assigned to one when with dysfunction or rare condition. Psychological disorder: Unipolar depression There are two types or kinds of unipolar depressions namely Major depression disorders and Dysthmic disorder. People infected with Major depression disorders experience major depressive episodes and they have no history of mania in their diagnosis. In addition these disorder can categorized as recurring on preceding the previous episode; seasonal meaning it changes with seasons; catatonic if it is either marked by either excessive activity or immobility; postpartum meaning occurring four weeks on giving birth or melancholic, if the person is not affected by pleasurable events. People affected by Dysthmic disorder show long-lasting but less disabling pattern of unipolar depression disorder; a sequence referred to as double depression. Symptoms There are five symptoms of unipolar depression which vary from person to person thus pinpointing a clear set of symptoms is difficult. These symptoms exacerbate one another spanning five areas of function. They include emotional symptoms whereby most depressed people feel sad and rejected. Such people describe themselves as ââ¬Ëemptyââ¬â¢, humiliatedââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëmiserableââ¬â¢. They get little pleasure from anything and they tend to lose humor. Some may also experience anxiety, agitation or anger. Motivational symptoms in which depressed people will lose their inner desire to pursue their activities. They report lack of initiative, drive and spontaneity. They may have to force themselves to talk with friends, eat meals, and go to work, or have sex, a state referred to a paralysis of will. Behavioral symptoms; whereby depressed people are less productive and less active. They stay in bed for long periods and spent more time alone. Such people may even move and speak more slowly seeming reluctant and lacking energy. Cognitive symptoms in which the depressed person holds extremely negative images about themselves. They consider themselves as inadequate, inferior, undesirable, or perhaps evil. The last symptom is physical symptom whereby depressed people have frequent physical ailments such as constipation, dizzy spells, indigestion and general pain. Psychotherapy and treatment There are different options when suffering from depression though they may not necessarily work for all people. The first step when suffering from depression is to visit your GP. Many people find these difficult since they fear that their GP may not take them seriously. However one is suppose to secure an appointment with the doctor, prepare on what to ask and the kind of words to use. Psychotherapy is the most preferred treatment for depression disorder, because although medication can help reduce some of the symptoms but it doesnââ¬â¢t treat the underlying psychological disorders. Medication Psychiatric drugs are an important part of treatment of depression disorders. Most commonly used drug for treatment of depression is an antidepressant. Depressant are only used incase of severe depression or moderate which hasnââ¬â¢t responded to lifestyle changes and psychological therapy. There are two reasons for these that recent research has indicated that unless severely depressed, antidepressants wonââ¬â¢t work.
